Since ancient times, people have been curious about their inner workings, i.e. what drives their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Although the focus on psychological, social, and emotional well-being, collectively known as mental health, hasn't always been a priority, it has become increasingly important in modern societies. With mental health recognized as an integral part of personal identity and digital transformation rapidly advancing across various fields, significant steps have been made to bring mental health into the digital era. In this opinion paper, we focus on the latest advancements in mental health treatment using immersive virtual reality. We explore the benefits and challenges of integrating this technology into clinical practice and highlight promising tools and methods, such as artificial intelligence and gamification, that have the potential to transform the treatment of mental health conditions. Finally, we suggest areas for further research and emphasize that new technologies and tools are designed to complement, not replace, traditional mental health practices, always maintaining a human-centric approach.
