Wireless Power Transfer via Inductive Coupling: An Experimental Approach

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is crucial for eliminating the need for physical connectors, enhancing convenience and reducing wear and tear on devices, thus leading to increased durability and user satisfaction. WPT has the potential to revolutionize various industries by enabling seamless power delivery in applications ranging from consumer electronics to electric vehicles, thereby fostering innovation and promoting the adoption of more efficient, flexible, and sustainable energy solutions. In this study, an inductive WPT system is designed for small-scale power transfer over a short distance for mobile phone charging. First, WPT systems are briefly reviewed and the components as well as the working principles of the inductive WPT systems are introduced. Then, the study provides an in-depth examination of the hardware design and implementation for these circuits. Key aspects include the deployment of a PIC18F46K22 micro controller for generating PWM signals, along with the utilization of IR2110 gate drivers and IRF3205 MOSFETs in the transmitter circuit. Simulation studies are conducted to determine suitable circuit parameters for the experimental setup, with models developed for both the transmitter's inverter circuit and the receiver's rectifier circuit. Experimental results demonstrate the system's capability to transfer power over a short distance of 1 cm and successfully charge a mobile phone. The results show an output DC voltage of 5.41V and a current of 850mA, confirming the system's practical effectiveness.
