Smart Microgrid as Mitigation for Impacts of Renewable Integration to the KSEBL Grid System

Renewable energy (RE) generation has a vital role due to increasing demand in energy, dwindling reserve of fossil fuels and increased concern about global warming. Even though the advantages of ongrid renewable generations are well known, their impacts on existing electrical grid as a whole, is not well studied. This paper aims to recognize the main impacts of such plants on Kerala State Electricity Board Limited (KSEBL) grid system from Low Tension (LT) side to High Tension (HT) side and thus to the whole grid system. Measures to be adopted to mitigate such issues, transformation required for the existing grid to make future grid compatible to accommodate RE sources are also investigated in this paper. The analysis describes the importance of implementation of distributed generation with conversion of existing substations as the centers for storage based smart microgrid while transforming the present grid into future grid.
