Overview of Dual-Port Machines for Wind Power Generator Applications

In this paper, a comprehensive review of dual port wind generators for wind power generator applications is eluci-dated. First, the conventional and non-conventional wind gener-ators are discussed, highlighting their advantages and disad-vantages. Due to rising cost of magnets and other issues, the focus then turns to magnetless flux modulation machines, partic-ularly wound-field flux switching machines (WFFSMs), DC-excited Vernier reluctance machines (DCVRMs), DC-excited flux reversal machines (DCFRMs) and double-salient DC-excited machines (DSDCMs). The key challenge of declining torque density in magnetless machines, especially for large-scale wind turbines, is addressed by exploring dual port (double stator or double rotor) machines. The emergence of counter rotating dual rotor magnetless machines is also gaining momentum for wind power generation. The main findings indicate that dual port magnetless machines can offer enhanced torque density, efficiency and flexibility, making them promising candidates for large-scale wind power applications.
