Implementing and Assessing a GIC Measurement Hardware Framework

Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) caused by adverse space weather events present a significant concern for the stability of power networks. Measurement of GICs is important to validate existing GIC models, to understand GIC characteristics, and to assess and mitigate the risks of voltage stability in power systems. However, the widespread adoption of GIC measurement devices in transformer neutrals remains limited due to the cost, maintenance, and reliability of the devices especially when installed in different substations. This study aims to bridge this gap by proposing a GIC measurement hardware framework following a review of previous methodologies. The findings demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of this framework in accurately measuring GICs flowing through transformer neutrals. The solution proposed will facilitate the broader implementation of GIC monitoring in transformer neutrals, thereby enhancing network resilience.
