Double-Stator Electric Vehicle Motors: A State-of-the-Art Review

This paper details state-of-the-art for double-stator (DS) traction motors. It highlights the emerging DS stator-mounted motors and their potential to meet the challenging requirement of electric vehicle (EV) motors currently dominated by traditional permanent magnet (PM) motors. The EV motors are examined in terms of electromagnetic and overall performances regarding the topology, excitation method, design, torque quality, efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Due to challenges of supply, cost and reliability of high-performance permanent magnet (PM) materials, the study converges into the emergence of DS stator-mounted magnet-free motors as a sustainable solution for meeting the long-term high-performance demands of EV traction drives.
