Probabilistic Approach of UAV Missions Planning in Inspection of Overhead Transmission Lines

This study introduces a new probabilistic approach to the scheduling of transmission line inspection missions using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). Decisions are being made based on the risk obtained by means of probabilistic analysis of various factors that may have an influence on the UA V mission success: wind speed, battery life cycle and reliability, air temperature, distance between the UAV and the line under inspection. Probabilities of the mentioned factors are found using probability distribution functions, with each factor being assigned their own type of distribution and distribution parameters base on the literature review and existing practices. The object of the study was the 110 kV overhead transmission line. The results have clearly shown that the UA V -based inspection of transmission lines can be too risky in certain conditions and then human personnel is to be sent. This process of decision-making support is easily carried out and can be automated to further increase efficiency of the operation.
