DC-DC Bidirectional Converter for Battery Energy Storage System with Integrated Battery Management

Recent research highlights the growing importance of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the electrical grid, particularly in the context of the significant transformation in electricity generation. Solar and wind power, along with other renewable sources, now constitute a substantial portion of the global power generation matrix. In this high renewable energy penetration scenario, BESS is essential for integrating sustainable energy sources with reliable load dispatch and mitigating the impacts of intermittent energy supply. Various power converter topologies can be employed to interface BESS with the grid, playing a critical role in managing power flow. Among the diverse design alternatives for constructing a BESS. This paper introduces a multi-port converter designed for power flow control in BESS. This converter not only facilitates flexible energy conversion between the grid and the battery bank but also incorporates battery management (BM) functions for state-of-charge balancing and bus voltage regulation. Additionally, the proposed control strategy allows for the independent connection or disconnection of each battery pack from the power supply, significantly enhancing fault tolerance and preventing overcharge and overdischarge issues during BESS operations. Compared to centralized BESS, this approach improves overall system reliability by enabling the bypass of faulty packs. The functionality of the proposed converter has been validated through simulations conducted in MATLAB/Simulink, covering both charging and discharging modes.
