Intelligent Energy Storage for Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

In recent years we have witnessed a development of urban electric transport and an increase in the electric vehicles used. The power and energy required from the city grid is increasing, due to the growing number of charging stations needed for the local transport system. However, the power transported through the city’s grid is limited by the design conditions of the grid at which it was installed. This means that nowadays we are limited to install many charging stations, which are in operation, by the grid conditions. The solution proposed in this work is to install energy storage nodes that provide a surplus of energy in the grid and complete the requirements demanded by the energy charging stations. These storage nodes contain storage batteries that can be charged from renewable sources or from the city’s grid, when possible. The storage system cannot support the vehicle charging stations by itself, it only helps to supplement it with electricity, when the city’s grid cannot support the charging stations in this node of the grid. The battery from this storage can be reused as batteries from transport. Also, the storage system is equipped with an intelligent controller that monitors the energy request by the charging stations from the node of the grid, the status of stored energy in batteries, and the status of the grid. The controller must be able to communicate with the city grid to establish an optimum electrical power transferred over the network grid.
