Air-Cooled Cooling Method for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with Heat Pipe

This paper proposes and analyzes an innovative air-cooled heat pipe cooling (ACHP) method, where the heat pipes are integrated into the stator end-winding of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM). This approach makes full use of the inactive space in the end-winding, effectively reducing the impact of heat pipe losses on the system, and significantly improves the operating environment and reliability of the motor. Compared to traditional forced air-cooled cooling (FACC) systems, this method effectively enhances the cooling performance and power density of the motor. Additionally, the paper employs a simplified iterative optimization design method based on a lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) to optimize the dimensions of the heat pipes in the ACHP system. In motor thermal management, LPTN is widely used for simulating the temperature field of motors due to its simplicity and efficiency. By establishing a three-dimensional fluid-solid coupling model, and comparing the temperature results of the ACHP system with those of the FACC system. The results show that the maximum winding temperature in the ACHP system was reduced by 35.6°C compared to the FACC system.
