Shock absorbing seats for vehicles with pitch motion from explosive impact

In recent years, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) have caused explosion damage to occupants when vehicles are moving on roads in conflict zones. To mitigate IED damage, this paper proposes a seating mechanism that cushions the shock propagated through the vehicle to the occupants. A seesaw-type experiment was conducted using a scaled-down model as an alternative to an explosion experiment. As a result of experiment, the model performed a vertical throw-up motion with rotation. The vertical and horizontal accelerations were absorbed by the seating mechanism. The attenuation rate of the horizontal acceleration increased with a smaller spring constant.
