A Generic Approach to Extracting Maximum Power from PMSG Wind Turbines without Current Sensors

Power grids have encountered significant integration of wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) in recent years, aiming at carbon neutrality and net zero emissions. This will result in more complex control of power systems due to the intermittent operation of WECSs. This study explores a more streamlined approach to the maximum power extraction (MPE) technique, aiming to preserve the advantages of conventional MPE while substantially simplifying the control system. The novelty of the proposed method is to develop machine equations incorporating wind speed and potential disturbances and effectively manage voltages and currents to optimize the wind turbine’s performance. Additionally, this approach eliminates current and voltage measurements as well as the need for complicated tuning processes. Various comprehensive experimental analyses are performed to meticulously assess the performance of the proposed method. These results are then compared with the field-oriented control method.
