3D Dental Reconstruction Based on 2D X-Ray Images: A Survey

In dentistry, many diseases, such as gum, cavities, and oral cancer, affect people of all ages. Early treatment and diagnosis are crucial for minimizing the effect of dental diseases on overall health, and they can also save money in the long run. Traditional dental diagnosis methods, such as manual probing and visual inspection, are time-consuming and can be subject to human errors. Thus, X-ray images 3D reconstruction is the preferred method for visualizing a patient's 3D anatomy for clinical analysis. Limiting the number of radiographs taken to one or two per patient is crucial. However, 3D reconstruction from 2D X-ray images presents challenges due to the lack of appropriate feature extraction methods and relevant large datasets. Therefore, this paper presents a comprehensive survey that describes the various methods applied for 3D dental reconstruction from X-ray images to identify and categorize common dental issues, such as cavities, periodontal disease, and impacted teeth.
