Energy Management System for the Operation of an Electric Vehicle Charging Hub Fed by Solar and Wind Energy Sources

Reforms in the transport sector have been on the rise since the Paris Agreement in 2015. Given that the reduction of CO2 emissions in the transportation sector and the dependence on fossil fuels for energy production is at the forefront of the European Union's (EU) climate goals., the rapid growth in the use of Electric Vehicles (EVs) for personnel and logistics transport has fuelled the increase of improved EV charging infrastructures integrated with Renewable Energy Sources (RES). This paper aims to present an Energy Management System (EMS) to optimize the operation of an EV charging hub fed by RES thereby reducing the operational costs of the hub and the dependence on the public grid. Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) is used to develop the mathematical model of the EMS implemented in MATLAB and solved by Gurobi. An EV charging hub fed by a wind farm and a photovoltaic (PV) plant., located in the Ligurian region of Italy., is selected as a case study for the EMS and the results of the optimization are reported.
