The Academic Landscape of IoT in Smart Education: A Review of Trends and Mapping

The integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) in educational landscape of smart education has garnered significant attention from researchers, academic organizations and educators worldwide. This study aims to systematically map and analyze the global academic trends in IoT research within the landscape of smart education across countries. A bibliometric analysis was conducted using Scopus as the data source, covering 2012 to 2024. One hundred seventy-six published documents were analyzed using the R Biblioshiny and VOSViewer tools to extract and visualize key research trends and mapping. The research results show a trend of increasing the number of IoT in smart education research. China is the most productive organization and country, and Abdullah S. was the individual researcher regarding loT in smart education. This research proposes a categorization of IoT in smart education study themes called ISBS research themes (short for the IoT, smart education, big data, and smart campus). This study broadens theoretical and practical insights by highlighting how IoT supports adaptive learning theory, informs policymakers to develop national education strategies, and enriches school and teacher practices in personalizing learning and classroom interactions.
