A Triple-Active Bridge Based Solid State Transformer Fast Charging Station Topology For Electric Vehicles

There is a recent trend in Electric Vehicle (EV) batteries to shift to 800-V range battery electric vehicle standard instead of the conventional 400-V range standard. Separate chargers would be required to support each EV battery standard. This paper proposes a Triple-Active Bridge-based Solid-State transformer charger topology. This topology allows the charging station to support the two standards using fewer components and higher power densities. The TAB-based SST also has controlled bidirectional power flow among its ports, which allows Grid to Vehicle (G2V) and Vehicle to Grid (V2G) operations. The study introduces the power flow decoupling and a systematic design procedure for the fast charger topology to support both standards. The effectiveness of the charger topology is verified through simulation using MATLAB/Simulink.
