PYRAMID - Collaboration and Adaptability through the Application of an Avionics Reference Architecture and Modular Open Systems

Military aircraft operational effectiveness is critically dependent on avionics and mission systems, and fundamental to this effectiveness is the ability to provide new capability where and when it is required. In a contested and continually-changing environment potential adversaries are routinely adapting their systems, and the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) recognised that capability will become ineffective if we are not able to respond. Adaptability has become a critical requirement alongside the more traditional performance req uirements. Further to this, effective partnering, capability exchange, and interoperability between allies is essential for operational success. Modularity and open architectures have been identified as key enablers, but their consistent application across air platforms, and ensuring compatibility with other standards, must be properly addressed if the benefits are to be fully realised. In response, the UK MOD set a requirement for a modular open architecture solution to avionics and mission systems software to enable technology advantage through adaptability; not just on day one but throughout the life of the capability, whilst ensuring that fundamental requirements including airworthiness certification and security accreditation can also be achieved. Project PYRAMID was the result. This paper details the background to PYRAMID, the approach adopted, the benefits, exploitation activities, and international alignment activities. It also summarises the outcome of analysis to demonstrate how PYRAMID complements other high profile open architecture standards and approaches including Future Airborne Capability Environment (FACE®).
