Using Micro-Modular Reactors to Drive Freight Locomotives: A Concept to Reduce Air Pollution

Air pollution, a major global concern, negatively impacts human health and the environment. Land transportation systems, particularly road transport, are significant contributors. While rail freight offers a more sustainable alternative, its dependence on fossil fuels remains a source of air pollution. This paper explores a novel concept: utilizing micro-modular reactors (MMRs) to power freight locomotives. MMRs are advanced nuclear technologies with the potential to be zero-emission and highly efficient. By integrating MMRs on locomotives, this paper proposes a significant reduction in emissions from the rail freight sector, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly freight transportation system. This research investigates the feasibility of this concept through simulation and analysis, comparing emission profiles of traditional diesel locomotives with MMR-powered counterparts. The findings can inform future research and development efforts towards cleaner and more sustainable freight transportation solutions.
