Operator-Centered Design of a Nodal Loadability Network Visualization

Transmission System Operators sometimes need to reason about the loadability of a power system when assessing its voltage stability. This requires integrating multiple sources of complex information to make decisions on whether or not to perform a control action, defer, or delegate the problem. Current methods of representing loadability pose a usability challenge, especially during real time operations where quick decision making is critical, due to their high visual complexity. We utilize a human-centered-design process, grounded in operations-expert reviews, to create a new loadability visualization tailored to the needs of Transmission System Operators.
