Steady-State and Dynamic Tests of Overcurrent Protection through Real-Time Digital Simulation

There are many reasons to test a protection relay. To perform a relay test, conventionally a test-set equipment is used. However, today’s relays are highly sophisticated with several settings, protocols, and a high number of inputs and outputs. Real-time simulators (RTS) are often applied for hardware-in-the-loop studies in complex cases. This paper will explore some possibilities of relay testing using the Typhoon HIL RTS. Still, this paper shows that RTS can be used not only for complex dynamic system relay tests, but also for other types of tests, such as steady-state and dynamic tests. All the testing results are performed with HighPROTEC MRA4 relay and compared with the Conprove CE-6006 test-set.
