Energy Optimization Framework for University’s Residential Halls: Striving for Sustainable Institutions

This paper outlines an energy management drive carried out at halls of residence of the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore (RCET Campus).Goals of the drive were to discover; pattern of energy consumption by students, figuring out reasons of energy wastage and suggesting energy-saving measures for the hostels. An interview survey was conducted to learn about the demographics and perspectives of the students. The research suggests installing prepaid meters, changing inefficient CFLs and tube lights with LED lights, and replacing inefficient old fans with energy efficient fans to cut energy use. The findings of this study provide promising possibilities for educational institutional hostels to significantly cut their energy consumption. The study offers the possibility of saving 58.2%, 37% and 50% energy in lighting load, fan load, and through geysers automation, respectively. All of these efforts result in an overall energy savings of 49% and a consequent reduction of USD 12827 in electricity bills. Hence it would be beneficial to university economically.
