Evaluating Voltage and Frequency Profile of Grid During Extreme Event Using RTDS

The integration of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems is becoming increasingly common in modern electrical grids. These systems serve as vital backups during both short-term and long-term emergency events, providing crucial energy security for communities and organizations that cannot solely rely on the wider grid. Traditional backup systems often operate using diesel generators, which are costly in terms of daily operating expenses and are only useful during emergency conditions. PV-storage energy systems offer a more versatile and economical solution, delivering clean power both during emergencies and regular operations. This paper utilizes a modified IEEE 12-bus system to examine the impact of replacing traditional generation capabilities with PV-solar systems on the frequency and voltage stability of the network. Through a simulated extreme weather event conducted on a Real-Time Digital Simulator, the study demonstrates that the introduction of PV-storage technology significantly improves voltage stability in specific buses. These findings underscore the potential of renewable energy and storage solutions to enhance grid resilience and provide a sustainable alternative to traditional emergency power systems.
