Analyzing Hosting Capacity Dynamics of Grid Disturbances on Synthetic Distribution Networks

The integration of distributed energy resources (DERs) into power systems necessitates thorough evaluation of hosting capacity (HC) to ensure grid reliability and stability. This paper investigates the implications of grid disturbances, particularly those associated with extreme weather events, on load HC in distribution networks. Utilizing the SMART-DS Santa Fe synthetic test network, simulations are conducted on 16 feeders to establish pre-fault HC profiles based on voltage stability thresholds. Subsequently, single line-to-ground (SLG), double line-to-ground (DLG), and balanced three-phase (B3P) faults are introduced in an iterative evaluation software to gener-ate post-fault profiles. Comparative analysis revealed significant variability in HC across feeders, influenced by their respective number of buses and loads. Pre-fault HC was higher in feeders with more buses, while post-fault HC showed that DLG and B3P faults had the most severe impact, reducing HC more significantly than SLG faults. The work in this paper highlights a critical leap in severity from SLG to DLG faults, underscoring the need for robust infrastructure and strategic planning to enhance grid resilience against severe faults and extreme weather events. The findings provide valuable insights for developing adaptive management strategies and improving the resilience of power systems.
