A Review of Aerodynamic Flow Control Utilizing Distributed Electric Propulsion

Distributed Electric Propulsion (DEP) is an innovative concept that uses multiple electric-driven propulsors distributed along the wingspan of an aircraft. By optimizing propulsor placement and configuration, DEP enhances aeropropulsive interactions, leading to improved lift, reduced drag and better performance compared to conventional designs. Propulsors from both electric and turbo-electric power sources have been developed and studied within the DEP concept in terms of influencing aerodynamics and propulsion. Rooted in earlier concepts like vortex generators, cross flow fans and jet flaps, DEP can reduce pressure and viscous drag through wake-filling and boundary layer ingestion. The technology allows for smaller wing designs, reducing form drag and improving structural health. DEP also provides opportunities for advanced flight control, such as thrust vectoring and offers benefits in terms of noise reduction and propulsive efficiency, despite some integration challenges.
