Low Cost 3-Wheel Hybrid Electric Segway

In response to the growing need for efficient and eco-friendly transportation within expansive environments like campuses, industries, and metropolises, this paper presents the design and simulation of a novel 3-wheeled hybrid Segway. This design addresses the limitations of conventional vehicles by integrating a low-power electric brushless DC (BLDC) motor for short-distance travel, seamlessly transitioning to an internal combustion engine (ICE) for higher speeds and power demands. A common throttle controls both power sources, ensuring a smooth user experience. Furthermore, a regenerative braking system captures energy during deceleration and utilizes it to recharge the batteries, enhancing overall energy efficiency. The design was verified and optimized through MATLAB simulations, focusing particularly on maximizing energy recovery during braking. The design was made in Solidworks and validated in Abaqus CAE. This research demonstrates a promising approach for developing a sustainable and efficient transportation solution, offering advantages such as reduced energy consumption, lower emissions, and maneuverability within congested spaces.
