Extending the Functionality of the Universal Learning Platform: The Third Hybrid Operation Circuit and Device Characterization Board

The Third Circuit and Device Characterization Board extends the curricula of the Automated Device and Circuit Characterization Laboratory by leveraging the Universal Learning Platform STEM learning system base station, standard bench instruments, data acquisition techniques, instrument control and automation deployment. In this paper, we design and evaluate a new automated characterization application board, that implements test setups for the Diac, High-Side driver and Schmitt trigger. The custom developed educational measurement system is capable of DC measurements with an accuracy higher than of 1mV and 1mA, leveraging power supply sweeps in the range of 0-45V. Moreover, the reconfigurable application board's robustness is enhanced by using interchangeable daughter boards for temperature-stressed devices, limiting the current and power supply voltage, to prevent device and IC damage. Custom design and modularity improve the scalability of the learning environment in a hybrid delivery approach, fostering DC transfer characteristic, series resistance and hysteresis measurements, aligning with the highest STEM educational standards for uni-versity e-learning facilities.
