Transmission Hosting Capacity for Connections Planning in Renewables High Penetration Areas

The transition towards renewable energy sources necessitates efficient planning methodologies to optimize their deployment across different geographical contexts, in a coordinated manner with the National Transmission Network (NTG) evolution. This study presents an integrated methodology aimed for renewable energy planning, considering several analytical criteria such as security criteria for grid operation and technical feasibility of connection solution to the NTG. Different approaches to identify the maximum RES capacity integration in the grid portions are explored, investigating the concept of Transmission Hosting Capacity (THC). Through a real case study application focused on an Italian grid portion, the efficacy of the proposed approach is demonstrated, highlighting its ability to facilitate informed and sustainable renewable energy planning, offering a comprehensive framework for decision-making.
