Implementation of IoT and Fuzzy Logic Driven Real-Time Smart Storage Monitoring System

Post-harvest losses of onion incurred during storage pose a significant global concern. To reduce post-harvest losses, this study explores the applications of fuzzy logic to predict the storage lifespan of onions. This study implemented an Internet of Things (IoT) based approach to monitor different parameters in onion storage and warehousing in real-time. Additionally, to enhance productivity, the system also offers a web-based interface and automated notifications (Email and SMS). Temperature, humidity and, presence of gases (Ammonia and CO2) are three major factors considered in the study. By utilizing these fuzzy variables, the fuzzy logic approach offers significant advantages over standard methods, effectively addressing the critical variabilities of these factors. When the environment conditions are maintained within the storage system, the predicted average shelf life of the onions is determined using fuzzy logic. This method ensures a more accurate and reliable estimate by taking into account the factors influencing the storage duration. The results of these experiments affirm that the suggested system assists stakeholders in taking necessary actions in case of any potential environmental fluctuations, thereby enhancing the quality and extending the shelf life of onions.
