A Low-Power Cryogenic Analog Electrode Signal Processing Unit for Shuttling Operations in a Trapped-Ion Quantum Computer

This work demonstrates an integrated analog electrode signal processing (ESP) unit for controlling the instantaneous potentials at the electrodes of a trapped-ion quantum computer (TIQC) using ${ }^{171} \mathbf{Y b}^{+}$ions. After an initial calibration the ESP’s performance is verified to operate properly at 4.3 K. Arbitrary waveforms with a sampling frequency of 1 MHz can be generated with a full-scale (FS) range of up to 17 V based upon a 12-bit input control word. The ion’s noise sensitivity inside the trap is addressed by an improved noise performance with measured spectral noise density (SND) of $0.6 \mu \mathrm{~V} / \sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ at 100 kHz as well as RMS noise of 2.6 mV within a bandwidth of 100 Hz to 500 kHz. Implemented in a 130 nm high-voltage (HV) bulk CMOS technology, the proposed system dissipates 8.8 mW at 4.3 K. The entire circuitry takes up an active area of $1.7 \mathrm{~mm} \times 0.65 \mathrm{~mm}$. The proposed integrated solution is well suited as the analog building block for future integration in an ion shuttling controller system-on-chip (SoC).
