Sizing and Analysis of Dual Air-Gap Axial Flux Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motor for Electric Vehicle Application

Major electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are intended to develop efficient, compact, and environment-friendly electrical motors. Electrical motors used for EV applications should be compact and efficient. The procedure to determine motor rating from vehicle dynamics is discussed in this article. This paper presents design equations and a comprehensive design procedure of an axial flux brushless motor for EV application. Important design issues are discussed with adequate recommendations. To verify the information obtained from the design, finite element analysis (FEA) is employed. Results obtained from FEA are fairly matching with the design target.
