The Development of Environmentally Sustainable Portable Residual Current Device

Climate change is the defining challenge of our generation—and companies around the world are stepping up with ambitious net zero commitments. Designers are aggressively adopting strategies to assess product footprints and reduce the same during entire life cycle. While designing products, product attributes such as cost, performance, manufacturability, safety, and aesthetic are considered together. At each stage of the design cycle, solutions are evaluated and re-evaluated for technical, economic, and social objectives. In this paper, a methodology is discussed wherein sustainable design process is integrated across product development cycle. The process involves addressing material substances, energy efficiency, life-time extension, and recyclability to address commitment to net zero, reduction in impact on human health and on environment i.e., on land, air and water. One of the products under development was selected as a case study to assess and prove practicability. The method established help designers in the early development stage to validate carbon emission and ensure compliance with various environmental regulations, directives, and standards.
