Enhancing innovation through structured engagement: An analysis of technology transfer management at the Technological University of Panama

Technology transfer (TT) is important for universities to drive innovation and economic growth. This paper examines the impact of technology transfer management at the Technological University of Panama (UTP) from 2016 to 2023. UTP, through its Directorate of Management and Knowledge Transfer (DGTC), has implemented structured strategies to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial application, aiming to enhance innovation and drive economic development. The study draws upon internal reports, national patent records, and stakeholder feedback to evaluate UTP’s TT initiatives. Data collection involved archival documents, stakeholder interviews, and external records, with analysis conducted using qualitative and quantitative methods. Results indicate significant achievements in intellectual property outputs, industry collaborations, and successful technology transfer cases. UTP has filed over 160 patent applications and received 11 patents, spanning various sectors like agriculture, energy, mechanics, and health. Successful collaborations have led to real-world applications, including innovations addressing COVID-19 challenges and renewable energy technologies. Stakeholder feedback acknowledges the effectiveness of UTP’s Technology Transfer Office (TTO) while suggesting areas for improvement, such as streamlining transfer processes. Policies governing spin-off creation and regional centers aimed at decentralizing knowledge transfer activities further reinforce UTP’s commitment to fostering innovation. UTP’s structured engagement in technology transfer has significantly enhanced innovation and driven economic growth. By facilitating collaboration between academia, industry, and government, UTP has created a culture of innovation that propels societal development and prosperity in Panama.
