Design of IoT Based Wheelchair User Fall Detection System

Falls are a frequent cause of injuries for patients or elderly people in wheelchairs. This may cause serious injuries to person on wheel chair. The proposed fall detection system utilizes accelerometer and gyroscope sensors to detect movement. This device can be mounted on a person's hand or a wheelchair. The gyroscope sensor is connected to the microcontroller for quick transmission of data. The system continuously observes for falls and sudden changes in mobility of person on wheel chair. In case of any fall of patient from wheel chair, the proposed system quickly notifies to the caretaker in real-time. Further, surrounding persons are also alerted by alarm of an automatic buzzer. In order to prevent the false alarm due to normal movements of the patient on wheel chair, snooze button may be pressed within 5 seconds by patient. This causes stopping of buzzer. Thus, caretaker will understand about false alarm.
