Advancements in Automatization for In Vivo Raman Spectroscopy

This paper presents a console-based application designed to automate the operation of equipment used for in vivo Raman spectroscopy. While the current standard in diagnosing colorectal cancer involves primary colonoscopy followed by histological examination, this procedure is known for its time-consuming nature and dependence on subjective interpretation by histologists. Raman spectroscopy offers the potential for real-time chemical analysis of tissues during endoscopic procedures and may represent a promising alternative to current diagnostic methods. However, the complexity of spectroscopic equipment and its cumbersome operation hinder its widespread adoption in medical practice. To increase efficiency and minimize human error, we have developed an automated control system for Raman spectroscopy, which is already in a pilot use at the 4th Internal Clinic – Gastroenterology and Hepatology of General University Hospital in Prague. The aim of the application is reducing the need for manual operations and facilitating measurements even for less experienced personnel.
