A Method for Detecting Insulation Defects in Cable Terminals Based on Meteorological Information

With the development of power grid, use of cables in transmission channels is increasingly common. The weakest environment for cable operation and maintenance is the terminal. Therefore, effective partial discharge detection of cable terminals is very necessary. The existing partial discharge detection methods usually ignore the influence of environmental factors, so the detection accuracy is low when environment significantly changes. To solve the problem, a method for detecting cable terminal insulation based on meteorological information is proposed in this paper. Temperature and humidity information is added in partial discharge detection to establish a confidence matrix for insulation defects in the tested area. When partial discharge occurs, the meteorological index of the tested area is calculated in real-time, and input together with the strength of the partial discharge signal into the confidence matrix to obtain the probability of insulation defects. Experiments have shown the proposed method can improve the detection accuracy by more than 5%, reaching 96.44%, compared to existing partial discharge detection methods, so as to provide reliable equipment insulation state information for power equipment operation and maintenance personnel.
