Dynamic Testing and Simulation of Chassis Attached Remote Modular Heat Sink

The increasing mass of a Remote Modular Heat Sink (RMHS) in a chassis increases general system structural risks, especially failures under dynamic stress. This work designed a 1 Rack Unit (1U) server chassis representing the key structural ingredients and investigated RMHS dynamic behavior inside the chassis. The RMHS remote module is attached to the chassis base pan directly. Different RMHS designs are analyzed with the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and compared through stiffness analysis. Shock tests are performed on a chassis with different heatsink configurations and masses. Dynamic response of the RMHS is measured and compared with that of a conventional heatsink on Central Processing Unit (CPU) package. Vibration tests are performed with different chassis configurations. The FEA models are established at chassis level with RMHS, which are correlated to the test data through modal analysis.
