A Novel FDTD Mesh Generation Method Based on Itself Framework

A novel mesh generation scheme for the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is proposed in this letter. Whereby the FDTD procedure itself, the unstructured mesh, which uses triangular patches to describe the model surface, could be readily transformed into the Yee cells. First, a random filling method is used to generate the Yee cells on the model surface. Second, using a voltage source as the excitation, the electromagnetic field distribution in space can be calculated using the FDTD method. This calculation is performed with the model surface and boundaries set as perfect electric conductors. Finally, the whole region can be divided into two parts: one is full of electromagnetic energy, which is an external region of the model, and the other is the internal region of the model. The proposed method is simple to implement while keeping a sound accuracy. Two examples are taken to show the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method. It can be seen that the proposed method is less affected by the number of triangular patches and is almost only related to the number of Yee cells. So the proposed method has more advantages in calculating large complex models.
