Conceptual Model of a Robotic Bird with Independent Flapping Wings and Adjustable Wingspan

A promising direction in intelligent robotics is the use of bio-inspired approach. A prime example is the implementation of flight using wing flapping. This method of movement, optimized by evolution, is silent and does not disrupt the environment. It is well-suited for discreet monitoring of territories. The aerodynamics of flight and the mechanisms of motor control are being carefully studied to create biomorphic aircraft that mimic real birds in shape, appearance, and flight methods. However, developing effective propulsion systems that imitate biological organisms in flight remains unresolved. Meanwhile, the development of neurocontrol algorithms based on spiking neural network technologies is at the forefront of modern science. The combination of energy-efficient type of communications, adaptive motor pattern fine-tuning through sensory input, and a biologically realistic control system structure makes neurocontrol in flapping-wing robotic systems an extremely promising direction. Our research focused on designing a robotic bird sample with optimized structural layout, incorporating real bird features and providing an opportunity for agile neural control based on biologically inspired spiking neural networks.
