Dual-Band Omnidirectional Scanning Conical Conformal Phased Array Antenna

A dual-band omnidirectional scanning conical conformal phased array antenna is proposed in this letter. A dual-dipole quasi-Yagi antenna element is designed, operating in two frequency bands, i.e., 2.3 GHz to 3.2 GHz and 5.0 GHz to 6.2 GHz. The conical conformal array consists of 24 antenna elements, which are uniformly arranged vertically on the conical surface with an angular interval of 15°. During array operation, each seven adjacent elements is excited as an active region. By switching the active region, omnidirectional azimuth beam scanning is obtained within the operating frequency range. For better resolution, each active region can achieve ±7.5° beam scanning in the azimuth plane by changing the excitation phase. A 24-element prototype is fabricated and measured. Measured results demonstrate that the maximum gain reduction during beam scanning is less than 0.85 dB, and the half-power beamwidth in the elevation plane is greater than 60°, achieving large spatial coverage during operation.
