A 1-Bit Wideband Dual Polarized Metasurface Design for RCS Reduction

In this paper, a programmable metasurface has been developed for wide-band RCS reduction application. The dual-polarized metasurface unit cell integrated with eight PIN diodes is designed to achieve the flexible phase and magnitude manipulations in X band. By switching eight PIN diodes from ON state to OFF state at the same time, the reflective phase difference of 180° can be achieved, with the reflective magnitude better than -2 dB. As the applied currents of the eight PIN diodes are reduced from 1 mA to 0.01 mA, the reflective magnitude is switched from -2 dB to -15 dB. When the proposed unit cell is arranged into an array and manipulated by the controlling circuit, the resulting metasurface can achieve the RCS reduction based on the scattering cancellation and absorption mechanisms. Simulation results are given to demonstrate the backward RCS reduction of -10 dB under two operating mechanisms, providing a feasible solution for dynamic electromagnetic stealth.
