Design and Optimization of a High Sensitivity Low Noise Amplifier for GPR Applications

This paper presents the design and implementation of a Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) circuit for Ground Penetrating Radar receiver applications using Cadence Virtuoso tool. The LNA is the important component in the front end, responsible for strengthening weak incoming signals while introducing minimal additional noise. The objective is to achieve high gain with minimal noise figure to enhance the sensitivity and overall performance of the GPR receiver system. The proposed LNA circuit employs a Cascade configuration with active biasing to optimize the tradeoff between gain and noise figure. The design utilizes advanced CMOS technology to ensure efficient integration with modern GPR systems. The use of inductive source degeneration is implemented to enhance the gain and bandwidth characteristics, while feedback methods are employed to improve stability. The proposed LNA is designed using advanced semiconductor technologies to achieve low noise figures, high gain and wide bandwidth. Inductive source degeneration LNA and provides a gain of 41.72 dB and noise figure of 0.863 dB using inductive source degeneration and cascade topology. The proposed LNA design exhibits results, making it suitable for integration into advanced GPR receiver systems with a focus on high sensitivity and low noise performance. Through simulation and prototyping, the LNA demonstrates significant improvements in signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and overall performance, making it highly suitable for enhancing the detection capabilities of GPR systems. This work contributes to the advancement of GPR technology by providing a robust and efficient LNA solution, facilitating more accurate subsurface explorations.
