Cybersecurity Compliance Tests for Smart Electricity Meters in Smart Distribution Systems

Ensuring cyber security is crucial in a smart distribution system, mainlyin relation to smart electricity meters. As smart meters play a pivotal role in modern energy infrastructure, conducting thorough testing is important to evaluate their ability to withstand potential cyber threats. These compliance tests contribute to enhancing the overall cyber security posture of the Smart Distribution System, ensuring the integrity, confidentiality, and reliability of smart electricity meters in today's dynamic cyber security landscape. As part of product security, according to the IEC 62056 series, smart meters offering three authentication mechanisms at different security levels: lowest level, low level, and high level. This paper provides a comprehensive understanding of DLMS/COSEM security authentication for smart meters. As part of smart meter security, the authors simulated various authentication mechanisms available in DLMS to ensure the proper implementation of security measures in smart meters. Validating the security mechanism before installing the smart meter in the field is essential for protecting against cyber attacks.
