The Three-Stage Model and Analysis of Cable Terminal Boot Failure Development

Cable terminals play a crucial role in power systems. However, during construction, inadequate control over sealing lead quality and insufficient execution of sealing techniques by joint workers can lead to issues such as fracture, moisture ingress, and discharge in cable terminal boots. These problems not only adversely affect the lifespan and performance of cables but also pose serious threats to the safety of grid operations.This paper proposes a three-stage model for the development of cable terminal boot failures: poor contact, insulation moisture and corrosion, and discharge breakdown stages. To validate the accuracy of this model, systematic experimental studies and field case analyses of cable terminal boot failures were conducted. Analysis of experimental and case data confirmed the diagnostic accuracy and practicality of the model in real-world applications.This research provides important theoretical support and practical guidance for the maintenance and prevention of failures in cable terminal boots. Early identification of fault signs allows for timely preventive measures, preventing further escalation of failures, minimizing economic losses, and enhancing power supply reliability.
