A 1000kW, 41-Level Matrix Inverter as the Main Part of an Uninterruptible Power Supply for a Satellite Ground Station

A satellite ground station is one of the main part of a satellite communication system. The satellite ground station usually located in a remote area, particularly on a mountain top or a hilltop, in order to get a better line of sight of the orbiting satellite position. The satellite ground station complex comprises of the main satellite antenna or parabolic disk, a medium size building that housing the control room and systems, and sometimes another small building as the accommodation for the personnel and workers that maintain the satellite ground station complex. The satellite ground station usually get it power from the utility, but sometimes there will be events that leads to loss of power from the utility, be it naturally or human mistakes. So it is important for the satellite ground station to have a reliable and fast uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to maintain the operation of the satellite ground station. A 1000kW, 41-level matrix inverter is proposed as the main part of the UPS system. The 41-level matrix inverter then constructed and tested in a MATLAB Simulink environment. The results show that the inverter has a very minimum internal power losses and very small total harmonic distortion (THD).
