Comparative Study of DC-DC Converters Used in Electric and Hybrid Automobiles

DC-DC (Direct Current) converters play a crucial role in the design of Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Electric Vehicles (EV's). This study compares and contrasts different DC-DC converter topologies used in EV applications. There are two commonly used methods for DC-DC conversion: inversion followed by rectification and voltage level conversion. The multi-device interleaved bidirectional converters have proven to be the most cost-effective solution among the different converter types. It can be attributed to their high frequency, minimal losses, low number of components and impressive power output. Additionally, they are highly compatible with the development of electric vehicles. This study explores the importance of efficient power conversion tools in improving the durability and effectiveness of EV networks. In addition, the current and future research objectives in DC-DC converters are explored and specifically developed for EVs and hybrid vehicles.
