Power Quality Analyzer for Grid Connected Inverter

Interest in photovoltaic (PV) energy has surged due to its clean, inexhaustible nature, offering a pollution-free energy source. However, the process of converting solar energy into electricity requires an inverter to change direct current to alternating current. Unfortunately, this critical component, while adjusting AC power frequency, introduces issues that can compromise power system stability. Specifically, the inverter's switching nature can generate harmonics, distorting waveforms and potentially disrupting electronic devices powered by it, leading to malfunctions. This project studies harmonic characteristics within the grid, PV systems, and various loads. The findings could reveal the significant impact on grid harmonics caused by PV systems and loads when the inverter approaches its rated power capacity. Conversely, there's a reduction in harmonic percentages, and the type of load significantly influences the harmonics it generates. Additionally, upon comparing harmonics across the three aspects-PV systems, loads, and the grid-it becomes evident that the PV system's harmonics have minimal influence on loads, while loads significantly affect grid harmonics compared to PV systems. Our project aims to measure voltage and current with high voltage differntial probe (HVDP) and hall effect sensor respectively. With the measured voltage and current we aim to calculate the power quality by computing Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), Power Factor, frequency, and other parameters. For this we use fourier analysis which is done with the help of a microcontroller and display is used to output the measured values. In this phase we generated a PCB schematic for HVDP and BMS and tested the accuracy of the generated schematics using LTspice software. We also developed the chassis for our power quality analyzer and BMS. Now we focus in the implementation of display using microcontroller.
