Distribution System State Estimation Considering Asynchronous Heterogeneous Measurements

The state estimator plays a crucial role within the energy management system to support future smart grids, especially as the distribution grid undergoes significant changes. Distribution systems are becoming more sophisticated and in order to monitor the network in real-time various heterogeneous meters such as micro Phasor Measurement Units (μPMUs), Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) and Smart Meters (SMs) are being installed incrementally. Thus, the development of state estimation algorithms is necessary to incorporate measurements recorded by heterogeneous meters, as it enhances measurement redundancy in distribution systems. However, these measurements are often reported at varying rates and asynchronously. In this context, a state estimation algorithm that addresses this issue is discussed in this study. The developed algorithm is designed to continually update the state estimates using measurements received in an asynchronous manner from the various measurement devices. The proposed method is simulated on two IEEE test systems to validate its performance.
