Implementation and Applications of Antenna Utilizing Hinge of Foldable Mobile device

Foldable mobile devices have become a mainstream topology in recent years. This study aims to utilize the hinge section of such devices to augment the performance deterioration of antennas especially at high frequencies. Specifically, by integrating an Antenna-on -Display (AoD) operating in the mmW Ka band, we address challenges posed by folding/unfolding conditions and enhance antenna performance through simultaneous operation in semi-folded states. For closed-states, the Antenna-on-Hinge (AoH) is realized through an Aperture-coupled antenna situated within the hinge region. This enables the combination of the Antenna on Hinge (AoH) with Antenna-on-Display (AoD) in foldable phones, allowing the formation of Broadside-Endfire beamforming.
