On the Exploitation of Computational Imaging for the Next Generation Through-the-Wall Sensing Technology

Compressive Radar Imaging, also called Computational Imaging (CI), has gained increasing importance in the last few years. CI enables to drastically increase the acquisition speed compared to conventional radar imaging systems (e.g., based on Synthetic Aperture Radar, SAR), which need to densely sample the area under investigation. However, the vast majority of research in CI has been devoted to free-space applications. Hence, this contribution highlights the opportunities and challenges of resorting to CI for through-the-wall sensing. In addition, these benefits and difficulties are illustrated by analyzing an application example, where a CI system is employed to detect targets hidden behind two different walls.
