Free flight: how low can you go? [ATC]

This paper discusses a flight simulator experiment that is part of a Free Flight project, in which NASA, FAA, the RLD and NLR collaborate. The NLR activities in this project investigate: 'What is minimally required for airborne separation assurance?' A basic Airborne Separation Assurance System (ASAS) has been developed consisting of conflict detection, conflict resolution and conflict prevention (CDR&P) based on exchanging solely position and velocity (i.e. 'state') data. Past experiments have indicated that introducing this system for Free Flight is not only feasible but will also increase the capacity of enroute airspace.
